Would Your Foremen Benefit from Damage Prevention Guidelines for Excavations? CNA Can Help.

To protect workers and prevent damage, proper planning and procedures are critical for underground facilities excavations. MCAA’s long-time partner in safety CNA has prepared a risk control bulletin on the subject, and is sharing it with MCAA members. The bulletin covers preplanning, identifying facilities on large and small projects, on site procedures, backfilling, managing damage if it occurs, employee accountability, and more.

Learn How to Establish the Best Possible Ergonomics Program for Your Company. Join Our September 26 Webinar

MCAA has been working with the Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR), the United Association (UA), and Washington University in St. Louis to develop and produce ergonomics resources for the construction industry. Our September 26, 2019 webinar, which is free to members, will show you how to create an effective ergonomics program to reduce the occurrence of soft tissue injuries among mechanical construction workers. MCAA believes that effective ergonomics programs are critical in our industry, especially since more than half our workforce is 45 years old or older. In this webinar you’ll learn about two sets of new ergonomics resources, which will be made available to members for free through MCAA’s website. One set teaches contractors how to establish effective ergonomics programs for their companies. The other set is for training our worker about effective ergonomics in construction.  To access the webinar, visit the link below. If you prefer to access the audio by telephone, please call 415-655-0003. The access code is 661 495 207.

Train Your Team to Make Excavation Work as Safe as Any Other Part of a Job

Excavation cave-ins happen so quickly there is literally no time to react. That’s why worker safety training on excavations is so important. When workers use the protective systems and safe work practices that are covered in MCAA’s new Excavation Safety for Mechanical Construction worker safety training video, their work in excavations will be as safe as any other part of your job.

Workers will learn:

  • How soil types govern protective system safety requirements
  • How weather conditions can change soil types
  • When it’s safe to enter an excavation
  • Why atmospheric monitoring is so important
  • When protective systems are needed
  • The importance of effective access and egress
  • What to do if they see anything that could be hazardous
  • What to do in case of an excavation cave-in

Planning for Hurricane Season? MCAA Partner CNA Offers Guidance

Each year in the United States, June 1st through November 30th is considered hurricane season. The earliest in a year that a hurricane struck in the U.S. was June 9, 1966 when hurricane Alma slammed into Florida and Georgia affecting several other east coast states as well. The states most affected by hurricanes include Florida, Texas, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, New York, and Virginia. However, eleven other other states have been hit by hurricanes, including California and Hawaii.

Because hurricanes can wreak havoc on mechanical construction and service businesses, you may want to consider planning ahead. Long-time MCAA partner in safety CNA offers guidance on the subject in one of its highly informative risk control bulletins.

Using these tools and guidelines will save you time and make the JHA development process easier and more cost-effective than starting from scratch.

3M™ PROTECTA® Cobra Mobile/Manual Rope Grab AC202D Is Incorrectly Stamped

3M Fall Protection has determined that the 3MTM PROTECTA® Cobra Mobile/Manual Rope Grab AC202D is incorrectly stamped for use with 1/2 to 3/4 inch diameter rope on the exterior body of the unit. This Cobra Rope Grab is certified for use ONLY with 5/8 inch diameter polyester or polypropylene rope. All marketing information and the Instructions for Use (IFU) for this rope grab correctly identify the size of rope to be used as 5/8 inch polyester/polypropylene rope.

In the event of a fall from height, a Cobra Rope Grab used with 1/2 inch diameter rope may not arrest the fall and could result in serious injury or death to the worker. To remedy this situation, 3M is launching a Stop Use & Product Recall to replace all AC202D and related Cobra Rope Grabs that are stamped 1/2″-3/4″ Dia.
