Baker Group Announces Thoughtful Leadership Transitions

September 10, 2025

Baker Group, an MCAA member, announced a series of leadership transitions on September 10, 2025 that reflect thoughtful, long-term planning to support the company’s continued growth and long-term success.

After more than 36 years of service, Doug Kumm will step down as President of Baker Group effective October 1. Kumm has played a pivotal role in Baker Group’s success, leading countless projects and representing the company on numerous boards and committees serving Iowa. His expertise, dedication, and steady leadership have left a lasting mark on both the organization and the broader industry.

As part of this transition, Joel Veenstra has been appointed President of Baker Group. Veenstra joined the company 24 years ago and has progressively advanced into key leadership roles. Recognized for his thoughtful, practical, and people-focused approach, Veenstra has been instrumental in shaping many of the company’s operational strategies and cultural values.

In addition to Veenstra’s appointment, Baker Group has also promoted two long-standing leaders:

Tom Wengert has been named Executive Vice President, where he will continue to support the company’s Sheet Metal and Mechanical teams. Wengert has been with Baker Group for 26 years and has led the Sheet Metal division since 2007.

Russ Connett has been promoted to Vice President of Sheet Metal. Connett, who has 30 years of experience with Baker Group, has served as a Team Lead and Senior Project Manager, consistently demonstrating strong technical expertise and leadership.

“These promotions reflect both the depth of talent within our organization and our commitment to thoughtful succession planning. We are grateful for Doug’s remarkable leadership and look forward to the continued growth and success of Baker Group under Joel, Tom, and Russ.”

Gary Bridgewater, Baker Group Chief Executive Officer

These leadership changes mark an important milestone in Baker Group’s commitment to its people and its mission of doing exceptional work that strengthens our communities.
