Introducing MCAA’s newest safety resource… Model Lockout/Tagout Program for Electrical Safety. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recently revised its standard for electrical safety in the workplace. The most current version of the standard is NFPA 70E – 2018. This version imposes a new requirement concerning lockout/tagout of electrical energy sources. Affected employers must now establish a written lockout/tagout program specifically for electrical safety.

Whenever a new process, tool or technology is introduced to a company, there is always concern about how it will be used by the people in the field every day. At the Indianapolis Field Leaders Conference, UA Director of Training Chris Haslinger made a presentation about construction technology. His presentation included a survey which yielded some very interesting results from the end users directly.

The Plumbing Contractors of America (PCA), a subsidiary of the MCAA is beta-testing a new seminar for members that perform plumbing service this summer in Chicago. The one-day roundtable plans to help contractors learn from other plumbing members ways to optimize their service operations.

The 2018 MCAA Student Competition brought together future leaders of our industry on the main stage of the convention. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recently revised its standard for electrical safety in the workplace. NFPA 70E – 2018 requires affected employers to establish a written program for electrical safety in the workplace. MCAA’s Model Electrical Safety in the Workplace Program can be quickly and easily tailored to meet your company’s specific electrical safety applications.

With fast installation as high a priority as efficient cooling, Herakles Data of Sacramento, CA, chose pre-engineered, pre-assembled Daikin Modular Central Plants to meet their cooling demands. “Our number-one requirement in selecting a new system was speed,” said Laurence Stancil, director of facilities at Herakles Data. “The new cooling system had to be installed and operating as fast as possible, with minimal interruption.”

MCAA President Fuller Opened MCAA18, Noting We Are ALL IN for the Future

MCAA President Greg Fuller opened MCAA18, saying “The amazing members of this Association never fail to go ALL IN. Each and every single one of you. We are the most involved, most dedicated, most generous membership anywhere, and have been for some time. And as a result, as an association, and as an industry, we are now seeing – we are now living – the benefits.” The convention’s Opening Session on March 26, 2018, included a presentation by Bestselling Author Malcolm Gladwell and the ever-popular president’s video.

The team from Colorado State University won the final round of the Student Chapter Competition at MCAA18, taking home the first prize and $10,000 for their efforts. Their proposal for the renovation of a New York City steakhouse beat out proposals from the Fairleigh-Dickinson University, the University of Washington and the Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Contractors continued to build relationships with the members of MCAA’s Manufacturer/Supplier Council and student chapter members during the annual exhibits. The Annual Manufacturer/Supplier Council Exhibit highlighted well-known products and services as well as solutions that are just emerging to take on the anticipated challenges that lie ahead. The Student Chapter Exhibit provided members with another opportunity to meet students seeking their Great Futures in our industry.

During the negotiation process of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act at the end of 2017, the tax credit for R&D spending was temporarily removed. Emily Murphy has been unanimously confirmed by the Senate as Administrator of the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA). As GSA Administrator, Murphy will lead a workforce of 11,600 full-time employees and oversee more than 371 million rentable square feet of property and approximately $54 billion in annual contracts. Murphy is the daughter of MCAA past president Jim Murphy and Mimi Murphy.

MSCA recently released an electronic version of its newly revised Safety Manual for Mechanical Service Technicians. It is now available in print. The manual includes substantive revisions to sections on CPR, choking, OSHA, arc flash and electrical shock protection, and refrigerants, and new sections on hexavalent chromium, manganese, noise and zinc.

The MCAA and the UA have teamed up to provide additional financial relief to 357 field and office employees of our South Texas members who were victimized by Hurricane Harvey. Each employee is receiving a $500 relief check, with half coming from the MCAA Disaster Relief Fund and half from the UA’s Charitable Trust. This is in addition to the $1,000 relief check each employee already received from MCAA’s Disaster Relief Fund. Here’s the reaction of one of CFI Mechanical’s employees: “Chuck, once again I am floored by the generosity of others. Today I received a second check for disaster aide from the MCAA along with the UA Charitable Trust. Together with their members, they raised more to assist flood victims. This will help while waiting for the insurance company to decide what might or might not be covered. I have never been more proud to be a plumber for a union contractor that is so active in MCAA. Thank you again for your generosity!”

On January 23rd, President Trump held a White House meeting with UA General President Mark McManus and other leaders of the Building Trades. On January 24th, President Trump signed Executive Orders to advance the construction of the Keystone XL and Dakota Access Pipelines.

New HVACR chiller training courses are now being offered by the United Association Training Department in conjunction with Carrier Corporation and Johnson Controls through the 2017 Regional Training System. These courses will be taught by authorized factory instructors, incorporating manufacturer specific curriculum, and have limited availability. Admittance into each course is subject to registration policies by each participating manufacturer.
